Do I need mobile coverage to fly my drone?

For an ordinary flight, no: the link between controller and drone uses its own radio and does not go through the mobile network. Coverage starts to matter when what you are flying depends on it, which is the case for real time telemetry, video over the network, following an operation from an office and some coordination services that need to be online. In those cases a valley without coverage is not an inconvenience: it is the whole operation.

When you do not need it, and when you do

If you fly within sight with a controller and a screen, the mobile network plays no part in controlling the drone. You can fly in the middle of nowhere with no bars at all and notice nothing.

It changes when the operation leans on the network: telemetry sent to a server, video being relayed, an operation monitored from elsewhere, or services that need to be online during the flight. There, coverage stops being a convenience and becomes a feasibility requirement.

Coverage in the air is not coverage on the ground

It is counter-intuitive in both directions. Going up it can improve, because the obstacles blocking the antenna disappear. And it can get worse, because mobile masts point downwards and their main lobe does not cover what sits above them well, while at that height many cells are visible at once and interference rises.

So checking coverage with a phone in your hand at ground level does not tell you what will happen at one hundred metres. It is a measurement of somewhere else.

Why our layer is an estimate

It is worth saying plainly: the AXPA coverage layer is our own estimate, computed from antenna site information and a propagation model over the terrain. It is neither a field measurement nor data handed to us by network operators.

It is good for what it is good for: anticipating where coverage is likely to be missing and planning accordingly. It is not good for guaranteeing coverage will be there. If an operation depends critically on the link, the final check is to go and measure it.

What to do about a coverage gap

The first thing is knowing it exists. A gap identified before leaving is solved by moving the take-off point, adjusting the height of a leg, reordering the route, or accepting that the leg will run without a link and planning the drone's behaviour for that case.

What does not work is discovering it in the field. That is why the layer is drawn on the same map as the rest of the planning, alongside radio propagation and interference, and not in a separate tool.

Can I fly without mobile coverage?
Yes, if your flight does not depend on the network. Control of the drone runs over its own radio link. What you will not be able to use are services that need to be online during the flight.
Do planning apps work offline?
It depends on the app. AXPA lets you download the data for an area in advance so you can consult it in the field with no connection, which is exactly the situation where coverage tends to be missing.
Does coverage improve as the drone climbs?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. You gain line of sight to distant masts but leave the main lobe of nearby ones and pick up more interference. There is no rule that always holds.
Is my mobile operator's coverage map useful?
It is built for phones at ground level, so it describes what happens in the air poorly. It is a reference, not an answer for a flight.
